Muy pronto podríamos decir adios a los viejos tornillos de metal que se utilizan en las cirigías reconstructivas, gracias a una innovación en la que trabajan investigadores del Tec de Monterrey, Campus Puebla.
De acuerdo con SNC | TEC DE MONTERREY | AGENCIA INFORMATIVA, se trata de un biomaterial que se obtiene a partir del hueso de los mamíferos y cuyas adelantos científicos desarrollados en la biomedicina estas aplicaciones podrían usarse en elementos ortopédicos cardíacos, articulares, oftalmológicos y/o viscerales.
“La innovación de este sistema consiste en que el origen de la nueva ortopedia permite que el cuerpo de los pacientes pueda aceptar y absorber lo que se fabrique con los huesos de mamíferos, de acuerdo a la geometría deseada”, comentó el doctor Said Robles Casolco.
El catedrático e investigador del Centro de Investigación de Materiales Avanzados del Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Puebla, habló de los avances de la hidroxiapatita como una idea en desarrollo para desarrollar un biomaterial con el que se reemplazarían los tornillos de metal que se utilizan en las cirugías reconstructivas.
Estos “biomateriales se pueden definir como materiales biológicos comunes como la piel, la madera o cualquier elemento que remplace la función de los tejidos o de los órganos vivos”, explicó el catedrático.
Además, dijo, se van conformando como sustancias farmacológicamente inertes y diseñadas que se implantan y se incorporan dentro del sistema humano vivo”, explica Robles Casolco.
Este biomaterial tiene aplicaciones que poco a poco van restaurando huesos en personas que han sufrido fracturas severas, incluso se puede hacer uso como recubrimientos de las aleaciones de zinc, aluminio y plata, disminuyendo la importación del titanio para implantes.
Además, se pueden utilizar estos materiales nacionales dado el adelanto científico que esto representa, ya que al usarse como un biocemento para relleno de fisuras óseas o para unir los implantes, los hospitales y los pacientes tendrían grandes beneficios económicos.
Este tipo de investigaciones ponen a la vanguardia a las instituciones de educación superior de México, en especial del Tecnológico de Monterrey, porque en países como Estados Unidos, Alemania, Inglaterra, Francia, Italia y España, aún no han desarrollado un sistema de hidroxiapatitas cuyas características son ser bionerte, bioactivo, bioconductor, no toxico, tiene la capacidad de hacer osteointegración y no modifica la estructura genética del cuerpo humano.
Se concretarse este avance médico para el 2012, muchos hospitales de Texas, podrían ser los más demandantes de este tipo de cirugías, de acuerdo con reportes de la alta demanda que tienen los hospitales de Tercer nivel de este estado de la Unión Americana.
